The stones are speaking, and they are telling a story that the "Holy City" has tried to bury for centuries. Right there, in front of the oldest church in the city, sit three stone blocks. To the casual tourist, they might look like simple mounting stones or decorative steps. But to those of us with the Gullah Geechee Heritage, those who hold the records of our ancestors' blood, we know exactly what they are.
Those are slave auction blocks. They were used to sell the souls of our people, and they are still there today.
The Hypocrisy of the Steeple
Saint Michael’s Episcopal Church was built between 1752 and 1761, constructed with the forced labor of the Gullah Geechee Lineage. Our ancestors: skilled bricklayers, carpenters, and master craftsmen: raised those walls and shaped that steeple. While the church leadership preached the gospel inside, they were blessing the human trafficking trade outside.
This is the ultimate hypocrisy: a church pointing to heaven while profiting from the sale of human beings on its very doorstep. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the business of Charleston was the business of flesh. The church didn't just witness the trade; it sanctified it. The bells of Saint Michael’s, which have rung through wars and storms, also rang while families were being torn apart just a few feet away.
The Truth Offensive: Facts Over Fiction
Conventional tours will take you to the "Old Slave Mart" on Chalmers Street or talk about the Old Exchange Building. They do this to centralize the history into a few "safe" locations that they can manage. They want you to believe that the trade was tucked away in a corner.
