Step into the "Holy City" of Charleston and you are immediately greeted by a skyline of steeples. They rise like fingers pointing toward heaven, promising salvation and peace. For too long, the narrative of Charleston has been polished like silver in a plantation dining room. We are here to strip the veneer away. St. Philip’s is more than a landmark; it is a monument to a theology that blessed the hell of slavery while pocketing the profits. The Funding of the Sanctuary: Rum and Human Cargo

The Pew Hierarchy: A Seat at the Master’s Table
Feel the chilling reality of the seating charts from the 18th and 19th centuries. Inside St. Philip’s, the social order was divine law. The wealthy slave traders, the men who signed the manifests for the ships docking at Gadsden’s Wharf, sat in the front pews. They were the "pillars of the church," their names etched into the history of the city as "founding fathers."
But look to the back. Look to the shadows of the galleries.
The enslaved Gullah Geechee Lineage: the men, women, and children who were the source of the planters' wealth: were relegated to the back or the upstairs galleries. They were forced to listen to a gospel that told them to obey their masters, while the very men who owned them sat a few yards away in velvet-lined comfort.
Worse still were the steps. The steps of St. Philip’s were not just for entering the presence of God; they were frequently used as the stage for the most demonic transactions. Enslaved people were often baptized within the church only to be led out and sold on the steps or at the nearby markets. The same water used for baptism was still wet on their foreheads when the auctioneer’s gavel fell.
The Steeples That Blessed the Hell of Slavery
Hear the truth: the same steeples that point to heaven blessed the hell of slavery. There is no middle ground in this history. You cannot separate the "grandeur" of Charleston's architecture from the system that produced it. The Gullah Geechee Identity was forged in the fire of this hypocrisy. Our ancestors maintained their Gullah Geechee Heritage despite the church's attempts to use Christianity as a tool of psychological warfare. They took the stories of the Bible: the stories of the real Jerusalem: and used them as maps for their own Redemption.
