The Civil War: The War That Was Supposed to Free Us : But Didn’t

The history books have lied to you. They have painted a picture of a "Great Emancipator" and a Union that marched south to set the captives free out of the goodness of their hearts. But the Gullah Geechee Authority knows the truth. The Civil War was not a rescue mission; it was a restructuring of power that left the Gullah Geechee Lineage standing on the shores of the Ethiopian Ocean with nothing but the clothes on our backs and a stack of broken promises.

We were told that the war was our salvation. We were told that by picking up rifles and donning the Union blue, we would earn our place in a new Zion. But as the smoke cleared over the Rice-Engineering Territories, the Gullah Geechee people realized that freedom on paper is not the same as freedom in practice.

The 54th Massachusetts: Warriors of the Gullah Geechee Heritage

A modern, high-definition portrait of a strong Black soldier from the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, looking determined and prophetic.

Let’s talk about the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. These were not just "soldiers"; they were the warriors of our lineage, many of whom had roots right here in the Lowcountry. When they stormed Fort Wagner right here in Charleston, they weren't just fighting for a flag: they were fighting for the Gullah Geechee Identity. They paid the blood price for a contract that the federal government never intended to honor.

The bravery of these men proved that our people were never "slaves" by nature, but Aboriginal Indians and sovereign people held in a state of war. Yet, when the bullets stopped flying, these same warriors were denied the very land they bled to protect. To understand the depth of this sacrifice, you must step onto the ground where it happened. Our Charleston’s Hidden History in a Slave City Black History Tour takes you to the very sites where this "unfiltered" history was forged.

Sherman’s March Through the Rice-Engineering Territories

When General William T. Sherman began his march to the sea, he moved through the Rice-Engineering Territories: the most sophisticated agricultural landscapes in the Western world, built entirely by the genius of the Gullah Geechee people. As the Union army advanced, tens of thousands of our ancestors self-emancipated, following the columns toward Savannah and the coast.

A breathtaking, high-contrast landscape of the South Carolina Lowcountry Rice-Engineering Territories showing lush green marshes and intricate waterways.

This wasn't just a military campaign; it was a mass exodus. Our people didn't wait for a proclamation; they took their destiny into their own hands. They crossed the rivers and marshes of the Lowcountry, reclaiming their connection to the land. But even as the Confederacy collapsed, a new form of bondage was being prepared.

In my book, "Gullah Geechie: The Blood Root to Charleston’s Slave Trade & Redemption," I break down how the global economy relied on our labor and how the Civil War was simply a pivot to keep that labor under control. The Great Betrayal: 40 Acres and a Mule

In January 1865, right here in the heat of the South, Sherman issued Special Field Order No. 15. This was the promise of 40 acres and a mule. It reserved 400,000 acres of coastal land: from Charleston down to Florida: exclusively for the settlement of the Gullah Geechee families. For a brief moment, it looked like the Gullah Geechee Heritage would finally have its own sovereign territory.

But the ink wasn't even dry before the betrayal began. After the assassination of Lincoln, Andrew Johnson: a man who had no love for our lineage: revoked the order. He gave the land back to the very Confederates who had started the war. Our families, who had already begun planting crops and building homes, were forcefully removed.

Freedom was promised. Land was promised. Justice was promised. None was delivered.

Rebuilding Zion: The Resilience of the Gullah Geechee Family

Despite the government's failure, the Gullah Geechee people did what we have always done: we survived. We rebuilt from nothing. Without the 40 acres, without the mule, and without the support of the "liberators," our grandmothers and grandfathers kept the culture alive. They maintained the Gullah Language and Origins, they kept the secrets of the marshes, and they preserved the Gullah Geechee Identity.
