Piloting the Ethiopian Ocean: A Legacy of Sovereignty
Long before the South Atlantic was given its modern name, it was the Ethiopian Ocean. The roots of Ethiopia are not found across the sea; they are firmly planted here in North America. As a Gullah historian and Charleston researcher, my work through the 1353 Archive reveals that the maritime skills of the Black American Indians were an expression of their inherent sovereignty.
Navigation was a guarded science. The harbor pilots understood the "bar": the underwater mountains of sand that could gut a ship in seconds. They didn't use modern GPS; they used the stars, the color of the water, and a biological connection to the coastline. This mastery allowed figures like Robert Smalls to execute the most daring naval escape in history, not because he was "lucky," but because he was a trained harbor pilot who knew the signal protocols and channel depths better than any Confederate officer.
