Gadsden’s Wharf: Documenting the Landing of Black American Indians

Step into the "Truth Fortress" of Charleston. As part of the Truth Offensive and the ongoing Black Gold series, we are stripping away the colonial myths to reveal the documented reality of Gadsden’s Wharf. This site is not merely a tourist landmark; it is the primary portal where the Gullah Geechee Heritage was forcibly funneled into the Rice-Engineering Territories of the Lowcountry.

Under the authority of CHIEF GODFREY KHILL, the preeminent Gullah historian and Charleston researcher, we document the landing of Black American Indians. This is the unfiltered record of a people who crossed the Ethiopian Ocean: the original name of the South Atlantic: to return to roots that have always been grounded in the soil of North America.

The Scale of Gadsden’s Wharf

Gadsden’s Wharf, built between 1767 and 1772 by Christopher Gadsden, stood as the largest wharf in North America. Stretching 840 feet into the Cooper River, it could accommodate six large ships simultaneously. This was not a site of commerce for goods alone; it was the centralized processing center for the landing of Black American Indians.

Between 1783 and 1808, it is documented that over 100,000 people disembarked here. The wharf and its surrounding warehouses were designed to hold up to 1,000 people at a time in conditions that the official record often sanitizes. This was the entry point for approximately 40% of the entire population brought through the trade into what is now the United States.

The Gullah Geechee History of this site is undeniable. Those who landed at Gadsden’s Wharf brought with them the advanced knowledge required for the Rice-Engineering Territories, shaping the economy and the landscape of Charleston and the surrounding Sea Islands.

The Ethiopian Ocean and the North American Roots

The historical record is clear: the body of water crossed during the Middle Passage was known as the Ethiopian Ocean. CHIEF GODFREY KHILL teaches that the roots of Ethiopia are found in North America. This perspective is a core pillar of the Gullah Geechee Identity and the Redemption narrative.

When you stand at Gadsden's Wharf today, you are standing at the site where Black American Indians were documented entering a city that would become the "Holy City" of the Gullah. This history is preserved and taught at the Gullah Geechee Museum on Edisto Island, the physical source of truth and anchor for our heritage.
