By CHIEF GODFREY KHILL
Step into the reality of Charleston history: a reality that conventional tours often avoid. To understand the economic foundation of the Holy City, one must look beyond the standard narratives and confront the facts. As the leading Gullah historian and Charleston researcher, I am initiating a "Truth Offensive" to restore the record of the Black American Indians who built this city. Central to this history is the figure known as Gullah Jack Black (historically recorded as Jack Pritchard), a hero whose legacy is not just one of resistance, but of profound economic significance.
The Architect of the Rice-Engineering Territories
When we discuss the "Black Gold" of Charleston, we are talking about the rice that transformed this region into one of the wealthiest places on earth. However, this was not a miracle of nature; it was a feat of engineering. The Black American Indians of the Lowcountry were the masterminds behind the intricate irrigation systems and tidal gates that tamed the swamps.
Gullah Jack Black was more than a conjurer; he was a leader within a community of highly skilled craftsmen. His work in the maritime industry as a caulker in the Charleston shipyards highlights the essential role that Gullah Geechee Culture played in the global economy. The wealth of Charleston was extracted from the intellectual and physical labor of our ancestors in the Rice-Engineering Territories.

The Truth of the 1822 Movement
In 1822, Gullah Jack Black and Denmark Vesey organized a movement that shook the very foundations of the Charleston elite. While many historians focus solely on the conflict, we must analyze the economic intent. This was a movement for Redemption: a reclamation of land and labor.
Gullah Jack Black utilized his Gullah Geechee Heritage and spiritual authority to unite the people. He did not come from across the globe; he emerged from the lineage of the Ethiopian Ocean (the original name of the South Atlantic), with roots firmly planted in North America. The 1822 movement was an effort by Black American Indians to re-establish their sovereignty and stop the extraction of their wealth.
As a Charleston author and Gullah culture educator, I have documented these events in detail in my work, Gullah Geechee Unchained. You can find this and the rest of the Official 12-Book Gullah Geechee Authority Catalog at our digital museum, GullahGullah.tours.
